Cooking with Cannabis in Keswick

House of Cannabis is Committed to Destigmatizing Cannabis Through Food

georgina_lighthouse_attractions_0.jpeg

Just like certain types of fast food or junk food, quality is a concern that impacts cannabis users as much as culinary connoisseurs in today’s market. To talk about this connection, as well as learn a bit about his illustrious career, we sat down with Chef Jordan Wagman. Chef Jordan is a man who’s written multiple bestselling cookbooks, runs podcasts through his company – Potluck Infused Entertainment – and is single-handedly changing the way that people think about cannabis-infused cooking.

Having been cooking professionally for over 30 years, Chef Jordan has been using cannabis to help with managing his Psoriasis symptoms for years, but his biggest epiphany came when he removed dairy, gluten, and refined sugar from the equation.

In fact, within 60 days of cutting those ingredients out of his diet, he had 30 pounds melt off. For any person, that kind of direct positive change in weight could make a huge difference to their overall health.

It’s these kinds of positive changes that Chef Jordan’s new company is trying to guide other cannabis users to achieve through their own journeys. He tells us,

“Potluck Infused Entertainment - We’re the world’s first media company dedicated to the infusion of cannabis in food and beverage. Not only do I interview medical professionals daily, but my entire new company is based on solving for those that have ailments. But we won’t paint everyone with the same brush.”

Understanding Yourself & Your Needs First

Throughout our interview, it was apparent that Chef Jordan’s focus is on more than just creating the most delicious foods. It’s about creating food that’s not only tasty, but is a healthier alternative to many of the processed foods available to us.

However, before you can begin cooking with cannabis yourself, you need to understand how cannabis can benefit you. Learning this may take a bit of trial and error.

Jordan has done a lot of soul-searching throughout his career as a chef, as well as his extended time as a cannabis user as well. He explained,

“I truly have found my mental health, once I started consuming cannabis. I’ll say this to you, I never realized that I took cannabis when I was [a young man] for health and wellness. I only thought it was because I listened to the Grateful Dead, or because I had long hair and I was ‘trouble maker’. But in truth, there was always a health and wellness component. I just wasn’t aware of it.”

Chef Jordan’s experiences ring true with many cannabis users who have realized that cannabis is personally meaningful to them, and that the cannabis plant in its many forms, may already be offering benefits to them that they don’t even realize they’re enjoying.

Doing some soul-searching of your own will likely mean broadening your cannabis education along the way. This way, you can better understand each type of cannabis product, as well as how they individually affect your body when you consume them.

House of Cannabis stores are here to help. If you visit any of our weed dispensaries in Ontario, like our cannabis store in Keswick, you’ll be able to find helpful budtenders that will be glad to take the time to get to know you, your needs, and your preferences.

Once we know a bit more about what you’re looking for and the type of cannabis products that give you the experiences you’re seeking, we’ll be able to make recommendations on Keswick’s best cannabis strains, and other weed products or accessories that will help you accomplish your cannabis goals.

And after you’ve learned more about your own cannabinoid system and which forms of cannabis function best for you, you’re ready to start cooking.

Cook Smart Not Hard

One of Chef Jordan’s biggest recommendations involved finding a way to cut out those three big delicious (but disastrous ingredients) we’re all a bit too comfortable consuming – gluten, dairy, and refined sugar.

Many of us don’t realize that the ingredients in our edibles could actually be working against the benefits we’re trying to achieve from using cannabis in any form. Chef Jordan explains,

“If what we have in the health and wellness space are gummies and food stuff that are completely filled with refined sugar, what does refined sugar do? It elevates our inflammation. What are cannabinoids and CBD supposed to do? Lower our inflammation. When you have one that’s elevating it and one that’s supposed to lower it, what’s the net result. Zero. Less than, because I’d argue the refined sugar has an [overall] negative impact on your body.”

So, if we’re trying to avoid these three ingredients, where do we start? How can we still make food that’s as effective as it is delicious? He suggests,

“It’s very habitual for us to do pancakes in butter. But why? Why not do it in avocado oil? Who cares? Are you going to make bacon in the morning? Why aren’t you using that fat? Use your real fats. If you’re going to make bacon or tallow, use that. Because that’s flavour.”

Buy Fresh Ingredients from Georgina Farmers’ Market

Support your local vendors, and do your best to find the freshest seasonal product available at your local farmer’s market.

In Keswick, Georgina Farmers’ Market is just a hop, skip, and a jump away; serving many locals of the Keswick area with a fantastic selection of goods that rotates throughout the different seasons of the year.

With that in mind, Chef Jordan is clear that his menu isn’t based on what he wants to cook at any given time. It’s based on the best ingredients available to him from his local farmer’s market when he’s designing the menu.

Through this mentality, Chef Jordan is achieving something that many cannabis enthusiasts are only beginning to achieve – the freedom to explore cannabis’ many benefits from a perspective of growth and evolution; instead of being stuck in the traditional stigmas that continue to weigh down cannabis education. He explains,

“People have this story. People have this connection to the plant. It’s not only about ‘how high can we get’. It’s not only about the burnout, stoner and pothead image. Cannabis users today, we’re talking about people who are contributing members of society, we are successful people, regardless of how you define success.”
